Have a computer running W98, two hard drives and a zip drive.
Several months ago started having some problems with a DOS program. This program is called mall manager and we use it in our antique business to record sales and all business functions.

A DOS repairman was able to get the program back up and running and suggested I add a D drive and work off of it during the day and copy to C Drive and Zip Drive at the end of the day, which we have been doing.

A couple of nights ago when attempting to copy to C, the screen went blank and I had to reboot. Upon rebooting I was able to copy to the Zip. I then went back and tried to defrag and scan C Drive. I got a message that said physical damage had been caused to C Drive.

I called the computer repairman from next door and after he picked the computer up, he called back and stated he was unable to write the info from my old C Drive to a new C Drive because of the damage. He asked if I had the original 98W installation disk, which I did not.

He then attemped to put the hard drives into a loaner computer to get me through the weekend. He got a message that stated (in so many words) the hard drives were not set for use on the loaner computer.

My question is, what happens if I put another set of W98 on a new hard drive, can I then copy the D Drive I now use to the new C Drive. I have a fear that the DOS program I am using might not let me do it. Any Suggestions?

Sorry it's so long but I am kind of weak on computers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

DOS program shouldn't care. And the W98 should go on without much problem if you install the same version.
The problem may have been the filesystem types. W98 doesn't like the W98SE 32 bit filesystem. Ed Fair

Yes, but the media descriptor is different, and that has caused some problems. Ed Fair

hi...
i think it's a good idea for him to get a computer w/ raid configuration
cuz backup harddrive manually everyday is not really a good idea.

I don't understand why you would say that. UNIX systems do it for years at a time.
