I bought a beige G3 with a sonnet 500Mhz G3 and 224MB Ram.
It had OS9 on a 6GB drive. I wanted OSX. When I initialized the drive (1-because I wanted the space and 2-because I didn't want the previous owners files left on) it broke it. I have a spare 20GB drive and a 3GB drive. I can load os9 and osX on the 3GB and sometimes the system sees the 20GB in the secondary slave spot (I partitioned it into 7.5 and a 11.5 parts). It doesn't always stay. I cannot use it as the primary master on IDE 1 or 2. I have the jumpers set correctly.
I pulled the 15GB drive from my linux box and the system could not see it either.
I guess my question is, is there a size limit on the IDE controller? Or is there (yes I am a PC person) BIOS upgrade that needs to be done?
