I have (ok laugh) an old computer, old hardware and old programs. It's for my daughter's use. Anyway the hard drive is supposed to be 2.1 gigs , however i'm only getting 500Mb out of it. What's wrong here?

your bios probably doesnt use LBA mode, if it does you may need to enable it. otherwise upgrade the bios (flash) or get a new motherboard. or a disk tool that can enable lba mode

the best solution is calling your HDD manufacturer, they usually can provide you with some funky driver that loads into your boot record and makes the whole drive visible to OS. I know that Maxtor and WD (western digital) were lewtting me download those drivers off their website some time ago....hmmm 2-3 years ago...
Well... try that.
