Hi,

I'm new at setting up hard drives. Had a few problems getting my BIOS to recognize my new hard drive but now that it has, it has set it up as a slave master. Now I have the jumper settings set right but what else do I have to do to change it so its the primary master. Its the only hard drive in the system. Thanks for the help

Do you mean that it displays as Secondary Master, or Primary Slave?

If secondary master, the ribbon cable is connected to the secondary IDE port on your motherboard.

If it shows primary slave, you might want to have a go at those jumpers one more time.

Good luck.
If it says Primary slave; then you either don't have any of the jumpers "on"; or you have a jumper in the wrong place; look for a "DS" or an "MS" printed on the circuit board near the jumber (or CSEL; this setting will work too). If you use one of these jumper settings; it should be recognized as the primary master with little or no argument.
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller. Check the jumpers both on your hard drive and CD-ROM as well as where you have the ribbon cables attached.
Your hard drive should be jumpered to master and your CD-ROM to Slave. Be sure that you have the hard drive plugged into the end of the ribbon cable and also you have it in the right slot on the motherboard.
Joe

Thanks for the advice. I'll try your suggestions tonight and see how it goes.

good luck! :)
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller. Contact me if you think you've got one that I don't :)
