Is there a limitation on the hard drive size using SCO Unix 3.2.4.2? If there is what is the max size that can be used. Also does it make a difference in size if a SCSI Controller or IDE Controller is used?

As I understand it SCO 3.2.4.2 has a 2 Gig partition limit.

I know this to be the case with IDE drives. I have a 8 gig split 4 ways and it works fine.

There is some limitation of boot being within the first 1024 cylinders. Can't remember where I saw the caution. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Edfair and daddywith5,

Thank you for responding. I was trying to install a new boot hard drive and was entering the drive parameters wrong. When the installation program check for bad sectors it was OK till about the 1000 sector. At that point every sector had an error. Once I entered the parameters right there were no errors. Also I think I forgot to turn off memory caching until the software was installed as the installation manual suggested. Again I appreciate your help.

Manster,

Edfair is correct, the AT BIOS spec
limits the system to 1024 cylinders
for seeking a boot file. This is a HW
limit of legacy systems not the OS.
3.2v4.2 is also very old, and will have
problems with newer ATAPI devices
which it doesnt support, so you wont be
able to add a 30gig IDE drive without
upgrading to 3.2v5.0.6. or OpenUnix 8.
But if you have an older system, theres
no need for upgrading.

You should also leave your BIOS shadowing
permanently disabled, unless you also run
DOS/Windows on the machine.
