my friend asked me to help him with his maxtor external 200gb one touch. he had this drive running sweet for about six months. trouble started when winxp booted up and wanted to do a systems file check...it progressed to 22% and froze up.
when my friend rebooted, windowsxp saw the system files as "RAW".

this is the first time in years that i have run into a problem like this.

anyway, he had it plugged in using 1394, so i asked him to use usb, and that brought up same error message, so i told him to plug it into another 'puter, and that also came up with the "RAW" message.

any way of fixing this, or at least getting the data off the drive?

the usual utilities that come with retail drives could'nt get it going.

is spinrite able to fix this? i'd gladly plunk down a c-note on this app to acquire the ability to correct this type of problem.

I've yet to see anyoone on these forums report success repairing this type of problem, but more than a few have reported good results recovering data using GetDataBack available from Note that there are separate versions for FAT and NTFS.

thanks freestone, i'll check the site out asap, and get back to ya's on how this turns out.
