Have a Maxtor 200GB hard drive that was fine a few days ago. Began an install of Debian Linux and during the partitioning, the linux partitioning failed with an I/O error. All my attempts to recover the drive have failed. My attempts have included reformatting via WinXP pro, Win2k pro, and multiple linux partition programs. Any help here would be appreciated.

What happens when you try to partition the disk?

Have you downloaded and run Powermax (Maxtor's diagnostic utility) from their website?

Using the Windows utilities, i'm unable to get access to the drive to partition. I get an I/O error and haven't been able to acess it at all. Windows Hardware Monitor sees it as a drive, but I don't get anything under My Computer for that drive. I haven't used Powermax, but I've attempted to run their MaxBlast software, but it won't run at all.

Powermax is diagnostic - with some repair abilities, not a partitioning tool like others, so worth trying first (drive may be dead of course).

You could try something like killdisk (to completely wipe drive) - but again, drive has to be accessible to do this.

does drive appear in XP's disk management (run diskmgmt.msc)?
