WE are thinking about upgrading from 3.7 to 4.0. We have heard some systems crash during the upgrade process. Our BCM is equipped with a mirror drive, my question is can we take out the Mirror Master and replace it with a blank hard drive and make a mirror of the current system? If yes, will it do it automatically after it boots up? What kind of hard drive you you have to have, does it have to be identical to the ones currently in there? It currently has a Maxtor 2F020L0 in it. Thanks!

You could do that. You could also remove the mirror drive from the system, upgrade the system to release 4.0, then reinstall the drive after the upgrade is completed. The primary will copy to the mirror and you're done. If something goes wrong, you can install the former mirror drive as the primary and you'll be back where you started.

Thanks, Does the replacement hard drive have to be the exact same model as the current drives? Or can it be a bigger size, different brand?

I have used 40Gb drives as replacements with no problems in my Raids.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

The drive should be at least the same size, if bigger only the size of the primary will be used on secondary, e.g. primary 40 GB, secondary 60 GB - the partition created by the raid-controller on the secondary will be 40 GB, so 20 GB will be unused.

It is recommended to have the same RPMs for HDDs in a RAID-system.
