Hi Guys,

I am new to the forum and I apologise if this question has been asked before.

I have an HP server with Windows 2003 Small business. I have the OS installed on the C drive and the drive has only 1.7 gig free. I am wanting to upgrade the C drive to a bigger drive and keep all the info in the simplist way possible. I was wondering could I use some sort of ghost application to create an image and then restore to a new disk changing the partion sizes.

Any help would be appreciated.

I currently backup the entire hard drive using Ghost and burn it of to a disc.

Thanks

Colin

try acronis

i have just used snap deploy by them and it took me 15 mins to create image and 10 mins to deploy onto a different work station i was very impressed so i am looking at this server backup just incase i have to restore one day!!

Stand up wherever you are, go to the nearest window and yell as loud as you can, 'I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore.'

how big is the current C: drive? Most people who ask this question don't have SBS setup properly.

The current C drive is 30 gig. The problem is the exchange mailboxes are getting bigger and bigger and everyone needs to keep everything. The other thing is the client apps and antivirus applications have all taken up space. I installed various service packs for windows 2003 and exchange 2003 and I have my concerns about the addition of any required applications in the future. I have setup a seperate machine for all our account packages and database applications to not over work the OS server.

I am no expert and any advice will be appreciated. I am not proud if I have made an error I am happy to hold my hands up.

Thanks,

Colin

If your server hardware allows you could add extra drive/s, and move the exchange databases and logs onto the new drives

30 GB for Small Business Server C: is FAR more than enough. A 12 GB C drive would be sufficient. A properly configured SBS server moves all DATA off the C: drive, including the exchange information store. You know how easy it is to move the information store? It will take you about 30 seconds - most of that time is navigating to the information store location.

Please read the link below - it explains how to move all SBS data off the C: drive.

Thanks for all your help. I have 3 other drives in the server rack and this will certainly allow me to move the data. Can I ask if this will slow anything down for the end user.

Thanks,

Colin

Once you move the data, it may SPEED THINGS UP for the end user as you'll have more disk spindles available to do the work. (I do hope ALL your server drives are on a RAID). The initial move, especially for the Exchange Information Store will put Exchange offline while the files are moved, but the process should be RELATIVELY quick. If you do this an hour before everyone arrives for the day or right after everyone leaves (or at lunch if no one works through lunch), that should be all the time you need. How much time depends on the size of the information store.
