Hard Drive Question

I bought these two 500GB hard drive.

Hatachi deskstar HDS721032CLA662

My question which one is better? and which one will give me a better, performance meaning Faster and retrieving information quicker and why?

What are you using it for? If for normal computing,gaming,video, and stuff. They will be so close you couldn't tell without a benchmark test, so who cares. Now if you had 2, of the WD RE drives, these are built to excel in a raid environment, and would work better than the Hitachi in this case, but you don't. What would work better is an SSD, but the throughput of the Hitachi is a little higher, and it has a sata 3 as opposed to the sata 2 controller on the WD. Personally I like the WD better, but have the same Hitachi and it runs great and quiet.

They are both almost identical. You will see no noticeable difference in regular use.

If you are transferring huge files you may see a difference there with the higher transfer rate of the Hitachi Desktstar.


Other than that... there's not enough difference there to choose one over the other based on Specs. I'd probably go with Hitachi if only because I've had issues with Western Digital over the years.

Well, now that WD owns Hitachi storage, does it really matter? WD,seagate, and Toshiba are all that are left in the hard drive market. Toshiba only makes small 2.5" and 1.8" drives. So for desktops Either going to be Seagate or Western Digital or one of the companies they bought over the years.

And in 25 years in the business I have owned and had trouble with every brand, bound to happen.

I'm building a machine for autocad use and for some gaming. I want something fast and can't afford the SSD price tag.

I've already got the bluray drives and the memory so I would say I'm building a media center. the reason I am asking is because I saw the reviews for these two drives and the hatachi is a sataIII vs the WD sataII.

I figure the 6GB interface would be better than the 3GB interface but what about the data buffer. the WD has a larger databuffer than the hatachi.

am I looking at the wrong thing?

SATA 6GB interfaces are nice if you own either a Hybrid- or a Solid State Drive, but for regular HDD's it really does not matter that much, because the limitation of the mechanical parts used...

Well , you could have looked at a WD velociraptor. 10,000 rpm. very fast, but a little pricey if you can find them. used ones are going for about 100$ on fleabay for the 300Gb.

BadBigBen makes a good point. and since everyone else agrees that they are close to identical I think I'll go with the WD drive.

Then again the cache buffer in the memory controller might not make that much of a difference in data transfer.
wouldn't the SATA II with the 64 Cache cause some type of bottle neck situation even though it has a higher data buffer?

Here are the benchmarks for both drives, and frankly the WD seems to be better in most respects...
