I've got a server, Proliant ML530, in which I want to reconfigure with new hard drives. Currently it has three 18.2GB hot swappables in "Cage A" and two 18.2GB hot swapables in "Cage B". I would like to shutdown this computer, take out all 5 of the current drives and replace them with 5 new drives in the same bays. I would like to use these new drives to reinstall Win2K server and the resources that are needed. If I run out of time setting up the new drives, I would like to put the older ones back in until I have time to continue setting up the new drives.

Is this feasable?

To expand on the above post;

My main concern is not having any bootup issues between the two sets of hard drives. With the 5 new drives I will be using the latest version of SmartStart, 6.4, to get me up and going. Will this affect any of the firmware on the ML530?

Let's recap;

1. Shutdown server and remove 5 hot swap drives
2. Put 5 new hot swap drives in and configure using SmartStart 6.4
3. hours later shutdown server and remove the newly configured 5 HDs
4. Put in the older HDs and boot up as though nothing ever happened

I think you will find that as part of the setting up of SmartStart with the new disks, the NVRAM on the SCSI card will get wiped and reconfigured for the new disks. There is always a risk that when you put the original drives back in, the system will not recognise the configuration even though the disks themselves should contain the required information to get you going again.

As long you configure your system the same way (NVRAM).. theb you shouldn´t have a problem...

Thanks for the responses. This sucks as all of my server hardware experience has been with Dell and not Compaq.
