How do you partition a hard drive to install an operating system?

You can do it a few ways, either format and partition your disk using a Win98/me boot disk ( ) or if it's XP you can just install straight from the CD and then use a tool like Partition Magic to sort your partitions afterwards.

When you install the OS it give you the option of creating your partitions and which partition you want to install your OS on. Then it will ask you what format you want to use to format the partitions. If you just follow the prompts when loading the OS it is very easy.

Read up on Microsoft's fdisk utility. Just doing a Google search should get you plenty of reading material. There are some free partition tools out there if fdisk doesn't get it for you.
