Just installed Windows xp onto a 40G WD harrdrive (all components brand new) and loaded xp onto 1 of 2 partitions. 2nd partition used for data only. Everything worked great yesterday. Today I power up the computer and my second partition is gone! Looked in Disk management and only recognized 1st partition. Need help, any ideas as to what caused this and how to recover or recreate that partition without wiping out the whole drive?? Incidentally Bios recognizes the drive but windows does not (at least the second partition). I'm stumped...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Before getting elaborate, in Disk Management select Action, rescan drives.

In Disk Management.
Select the disk you want to add a partition to. you should have unused disk space. create an extended drive by clicking on the unused disk space, then create a logical drive within the extended drive. you will be able to sellect the size of, or number of drives you wish to create.

hope this is of help to you.

disk management has found unallocated space. my question is what the heck happened to the original partition i created for it. Like i said it was working fine when i transfered info to it and was able to access the drive. Hope this isnt recurring. Thanks for the help guys!

You'll probably need a data recovery app to get stuff back

Was second partition a primary or logical in extended? How did you create it (with XP's disk management or during XP install - or previously with fdisk or other partition manager?)
