I have two machines. A P4 1.5 and a PIII 650. I am upgrading the PIII's 12 gig 5400 rpm HD to a 40 gb 7200 rpm HD. I can just place the 40 gb HD into the P4 and it is recognized, and I can load and OS onto it, but when I put it into the PIII, the computer never seems to recognize the HD and fails to recognize anything past the CDRW. Is there some setting in the bios that I need to change? I am fairly new at hardware issues, and I have no idea what might be causing the problem. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Could it be the BIOS doesn't recognize more that 32GB? If that is the case, you may need a BIOS update from the motherboard/computer manufacturer.

Yes, it's the old BIOS problem and it have to be reflashed.
If you novice in BIOS upgrading be careful when reflashing the BIOS. The slightest mistake can result to full inoperability of ypour motherboard.

An alternative solution is to install additional PCI-IDE controller. It allows to avoid reflasing the BIOS and will allow to use all stock of productivity of a new disk (UDMA100 or 133).

Another alternative would be to download (for free!) the software from the hard drive manufacturer's website that can be used to install the hard drive in a system whose BIOS wouldn't normally recognize it. Maxtor's program is MaxBlast, which is currently at version MaxBlast Plus II v. 1.30, while Western Digital's program is Date LifeGuard (DLG), which is at version 10.0. Other manufacturers have similar utilities.
