hey guys, i'm in the process of building myself a computer and after i put it all together for some reason windows won't recognize the harddrive when i try and install. i dl-ed all the drivers, formatted and partitioned using maxtor, and for some reason windows still won't recognize it. any help?

More information clearly is needed, such as motherboard manufacturuer and board model. What type and size is the Maxtor drive (IDE or SATA)? What version and service pack level of Windows?

haha, spaced that one. heres some specs. the motherboard is an asus a8v 939. the hard drive itself is a western digital 250gb SATA. the windows is xp pro, i believe service pack 1.

Very, very early during the non-GUI stage of the XP install, you are prompted to press F6 to install 3rd party drivers. You should press F6 at that stage, then when you are prompted, feed XP the SATA driver diskette. Leave the diskette in until XP wants to reboot and start the GUI install stage.

is this the primary master? probably not as you seem to be able to boot and use the computer.
windows won't recognize the harddrive

what does bios say?

did you configure the jumpers properly? i recently had trouble with the bios recognising a CDD 'cause i didn't have the jumpers set properly.

until you get the bios to recognise the drive you are toast.

alright, so i think with your guys help and some help from tech support i figured it out. what i had to do was partition and format the drive from boot with the disk for the HD. then, i needed to create a disk using a file off of the motherboard CD, which needs to be loaded after i press F6 in the windows set-up. this is the first time i've had to deal with a SATA drive and it'd better be fast for all the hassle. :p thanks!
