My computer can't see the hard drive when booting but if I but another hard drive on the computer and put the original hard drive as the slave it will see the original hd. I believe the master header is damaged. What do i need to do so I can use the origainal hd as the primary drive.

When you attempt to boot - what happens? Blue Screen or just a message saying Primary HD not found? What error message if any?

have you tried running the 'chkdsk /r' command through Windows XP recovery console?

Worth a try...put your XP CD in, let it load up, then when given the options, press R for the recovery console. If there is no luck with the chkdsk command, try 'fixboot'

Depending on what the actual fault is, you may or may not be able to access the disk through this utility.

tlbader,

Also worth a shot, probably just to rule it out, is to run the drive manufacturer's utility for determining if your drive (or its filestructure) is damaged.

Depending on the manufacturer, this may be small enough to fit on a floppy, or may require that you burn a bootable CD.

If the drive is in fact damaged, it may be covered by warranty, although you'll want to recover as much data as possible before you send it back.
