Hi, I recently had a computer built and the tech installed a Samsung SP1203N 120 GB capacity; 7200 RPM, 8MB Cache Hard Drive. It was ultra quiet, never heard it which is what I wanted. Then I decided to upgrade the CPU to Pentium 4, so he had to replace the motherboard and consequently numerous drivers on the hard drive. Also decided to replace the case at the same time. Now I can't stand the annoying grinding, percolating, noises this HD makes. It's making noise with every little move I make (open Outlook, send/receive email, open Word, close Word, scroll through program files in Explorer, and sometimes just while it's idling such as right now). I can't stand this. Seems like the drive took on a new sound. Should I ask the tech to reformat this HD, (which specifically said he did not do when he installed the new drivers and CPU)?

This has nothing to do with Data on the hard drive. If possible, remove the hard drive and place it on a box (still connected). See if the noise disappears. If so, check on the physical mounting of the drive. If the drive itself is noisy (doubtful), Intel makes a program that quiets down the mechanics of the drive. You may have had this program on the drive, and it was over written by the new drivers.

Thank you. Will give it a try.

Seems to me the Samsung spinpoint drives are fairly quiet drives to begin with.
