Lately, there is an intermittent low pitched droning noise coming from within my tower. My hard drive is about 3-4 years old. Could this sound be an indication that my hard drive is going out? Instruction on this would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Actually, it is more likely your CPU or chip fan on your motherboard. Usually, by the time your harddrive makes noise, it's all over! Open your computer and see if you can see where exzctly the noise is coming from. It may even be a cable (or wire), touching one of the fans.

It may well be your hard drive as well as they can give these indications before failing.

BACK UP all data now just in case (not just vital data). If you find that it is the drive that is failing (you may like to take the drive out and put it on a box externally to check if this is the noise.) replace it immediately if it has any data on it you may want to keep.

Sounds definitely more like a fan to me. Also, as was already mentioned, even a wire that slips a bit and now sits up against a fan will make that type of noise.

Open up the case and you should be able to find it right away.

Or if the hard drive is in a removable tray with a fan, those are notorious for noisy fans, I have to oil mine at least once a year with graphite and oil.

You can do the same with case fans and even cpu fans. You can get graphite in a small tube, kinda like a syringe, and just about any oil, actually you can get oil in the same syringe-like tube.
Peel back the label on the fan and put the graphite in first and then the oil, just a bit of each, then start the computer and give it about 30 seconds to work in and all will be well.
Dont put a lot on and be careful of graphite, it stains badly, worse than oil.
Also, if its the fan for a cpu, best bet is to oil it and then go looking for a replacement asap. For the others, just graphite and oil and thats it.

First you need to find out that the noise is not from the drive, if it is please be careful, it means the drive is heading towards a crash sooner or later, and you will end up with paynig a data recovery company money that you could spend on an entire holiday for yourself and perhaps your girlfriend.

Most computers these days have a "smart drive" option in their bios. Smart drive tells you if the hard drive is going to crash at some point in the future. Check your bios and see if you have that option and then enable it. See what smart drive has to say. That is, if it isnt already enabled in bios.
