My 80GB Hitachi Deskstar wont kick in.It isnt detected in the Bios and releasing NVRAM hasn't helped.I have replaced the drive and re-installed xp pro etc..but I would like to recover the 3 thousand photos and my work files that I very stupidly failed to back up to CD.
There was no warning one morning I just couldnt get past the POST
Drive was configured as cable select while trying to set faulty drive up as a slave to the new one I discovered that
with the power lead connected but the IDE cable off it still kerchunks.
Any help greatly appreciated.

The "clunking" is the head(s) trying to find information. This can be caused by improper HDD parameters. Can the HDD be seen in the BIOS? If not, you can't access it for backup or repair. If you can see it in the BIOS, (set the BIOS as "Auto", and drive as slave), go to the manufacturer's site and download the diagnostic program. I'd unplug it for now to prevent posible further damage.

DeskStar also known as "DeathStar"!

Deathstar sounds about right!
I cant run it as a slave...set jumpers set drives 0 & 1 for Auto restart get to POST look at lovely Dell logo and listen to kerchunk.Hitachi wont allow system to boot still thinks it is Master?
New Maxtor 200GB drive is at end of IDE and I have double checked jumpers.
Remove Deathstar and system boots I am looking at alternate jumper settings and double checking BIOS.
Think I might need to run this drive In a seperate machine
as both have main volumes set as C anyway.
Already downloaded utilies from Hitachi.

Took a look inside, mostly just curiosity as drive will be scrapped or put away awaiting cheap data recovery options.
Cant run any utilities as software cant see drive.
Dell diagnostics came up with an ECC error 0F00:1338
but I was running with jumpers set to auto spin disable need to make sure this didnt cause the code but looks like circuit board failure.
Noise is head armature attempting to engage which it does about five times then armature flicks out passes slowly across disc, returns and tries again.
P.S dont try this at home[dazed]

Life is a learning curve but going around in circles can make you feel sick[sadeyes].
