I bought a 300gb Maxtor hard-drive about six months ago but recently i found that it shuts itself down...it runs fine for approx. 10 mins then the computer shuts down...no warning, no restarting windows screen nothing...is the drive dead

Please Help

This may be an overheating issue?

Can you remove the side of the case, remove (carefully!) any fluff/dust from the coolers and fans inside and try to run it again?

I have removed the dust as you suggested from around the fan...in fact it is completely dust free now...i have another drive running at the moment aswell and that runs fine...another issue i found is occasionally the drive isn't recognised.

thanks for your help

Your best bet is to download the drive diagnostics from Maxtor - you'll probably need to do this before you RMA it anyway; sounds like it has a controller board error.

You have tried using a different cable and power lead?

If it only runs for ten minutes, get any irreplaceable data off it quick!

i changed the leads with the working hard drive and had the same problem...i will get the diagnostic program from the maxtor website and let you know... thanks for your help

Back up the data. Now. :)

I have found Maxtor HDD's as being really unreliable, but it will have a 12 month warranty so you are covered. If you can swap it for a Seagate, WD or something like that.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers!!!
