I have a Dell optiplex gx270 with win2000 pro. the hard drive shuts down but does not reboot the pc. the pc stays on and I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. I ran the Symantec 10.1 virus scan and it came clean. If anyone has any suggestions on what I should do please let me know.

Go to the website of the HDD maker and download the diagnostics kit. Run it to determine if the HDD is faulty or not.

You're probably going to have to replace it. The only real question is : are you going to be able to transfer the data to the new HDD ?

Pascal.

Possibly a service is holding the user profile open and not allowing the pc to shut down. A check of the event logs will show that this has happened , but not which service. There is a fix on the microsoft site which forces a so the machine can shut off. Do a search for Hive Cleanup Service
