I have a question on POS systems. One that I know is a Posiflex. Windows 98 is running with this program. I am getting a disk boot failure. I suppose it could be the IDE ribbon, the hard drive, the boot sector maybe. I have the windows 98 CD. I think I have the boot disk but I will need to use an external USB floppy drive because these systems don't have floppy on them. I need to try the fdisk /MBR but I think that I need to to another command I just can't remember it. If anyone could let me know and if you have any other tips? Thanks

First, install the HD in another system as a Slave drive, and run the HD manuf's diagnostics.
If it fails the tests, then you'll have to replace it.
If it contains critical files, then use a free data recovery utility to retrieve the files.

If the HD passes the tests, then reinstall it in the original system as Master with a known working IDE cable.
Next, go into BIOS, and make sure the IDE 1 channel is enabled. If it is, then see if the system boots with the HD connected to the IDE 2 channel. If it does, then the IDE 1 channel is bad.

If it does not boot from the IDE 2 channel, then see if there's an option to boot from USB. If not, then check to see if an updated BIOS has that option.
If there's no updated BIOS available, or an updated one does not have a 'boot from USB' option, then your best bet is to check if your system's MB has a floppy drive connection. If so, then buy a FD(they're cheap), and install it.
