To Whom It May Concern:

I recently bought a Maxtor Diamond Max D540x 40GB UDMA100 5400RPM Hard Drive to add to my computer, which only has a Samsung 4GB Hard Drive. Now, ideally, I want to set the Maxtor HD as the master and my Samsung HD as the slave but I do not know how I can go about doing this since all my startup files, programs, etc. are on the Samsung HD. Do I need to first install the Maxtor HD as the slave, copy the files over, and then switch it to master? I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you.

Oh, I'm running Windows 2000 Professional. I've heard that Win2k has a built-in hard drive management system similar to Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Tools software. Is this true? If so, where is it and how can I use it? Thanks.

Usually, hard drives (especially ones from Maxtor) should come with a free cloning utility. With it, you can attach the new hard drive, boot using the boot disk provided, then run the cloning utility which will transfer everything over to the new hard drive.

Some utilities require that you first attach it as a slave, then change it to the master afterwards. Others don't care which is the master or the slave, as long as you can tell the difference...

Unfortunately, I did not buy my Maxtor HD as a retail product...its a bare drive. So, I do not have access to Maxtor's cloning utility. Without the software, is there another way to do it? Like I mentioned before, through any possible built-in software/program with Win2k? Or do you know where I can obtain the software or any equivalent to it, preferrably free? (I'm currently checking Maxtor's site) Thanks.

Okay, well through Maxtor's site, I found that they offer a free download of their cloning utility, MaxBlast Plus II. So, I guess that solves my HD problem. Thanks, for you help though.
