Hi;

I have a Maxtor 40 gb hard drive with 3 partitions, win2k, fat32 partitions.

The drive is detected in the bios, the little light on the hard drive lights up, but upon loading windows the WINDOWS 2000 screen freezes at the very first progress indicator.

I tried the hard drive as a slave in another computer that has Win2k installed on the master drive, and it was again detected in the bios, but when I went to My Computer the screen again froze and I couldn't see any of the files.

Obviously I know enough about computers to realize that there is something wrong with this hard drive, but I really need the files from the last 3 weeks off of it since my last backup

Is there ANYTHING I can try to revive this hard drive long enough to transfer a couple of hundred megs of docs off of it? Anything??

Go to maxtor's site and download disgnostic utility (powermax) - and see if that can access the drive.

Could also see if you can access the fat32 partition(s) booting from a win98 boot floppy ( if you need one).

Good luck - I suspect the drive's dead, but you never know.
