I have a general question about hard drives. I have a Maxtor 120Gig drive that seems to be running hotter over time. I am wondering what could cause this to be happening. It's now running fine and is only a year old. The S.M.A.R.T. tempurature reading used to be about 20 degrees lower. I haven't moved the PC or am processing anything different from before. Does anyone have any thoughts on heat and hard drives? Thanks.

They have fans that simply screw on the top of the hard drive, I have one on each of my HD's. They only cost 6-10.00 and the HD never gets warm. Small price to pay for lower temps.

When is the last time you did a general cleaning inside the computer case? Perhaps the hard drive isn't running hotter rather than air intake/exhaust to and from inside the case has decreased.

Good point, but it's clean inside the case and the fans seem to be cranking out ok.

FYI, found the problem. When I replaced the old hard drive, I put it in another bay slot. This is what caused the temperature rise. When I moved the new one back to the old slot in my computer, the temperature went down.

Thanks for the help.
