I am not sure where to post this, as this is nt my area at all.

A software application I have requires a hard drive fingerprint to validate the software. However, on my desktop machine the hard drive fingerprint is returning nothing.

Why?

from my understanding of what you have written...

software is OEM for certain Manufacturer (Compaq, Dell, Siemens, HP, etc.) and you have another manufacturer or a homebuild system... as some system manufacturers put HD fingerprinting (ie. BootBlock with Manufacturers ID) so that their and only their Recovery Diska etc function...

I don't know what software you try to install, but I would do a google search for same software on the net and download it...

PS - I may be wrong here, so point it out...

It does sound as if this is your specific situation:

You are trying to install a preconfigured OEM disk for Windows, etc onto a machine that is not supported by the software. In that case, you are not allowed (copyright laws, etc) to use that software on the machine in question. It has to be used on just the one machine it came on. If you are trying to install the correct software onto the correct machine, then there may be some sort of error that has occured, or you upgraded the hard drive your self - either way, in this case, contact the manufacturer of your machine.
