I have a IBM Deskstar 40 gig hard drive which has clicking noise on start up which stops after about a 30 to 60 second time out. BIOS does not recognize and it locks out other drives. I am willing to try anything to retrive data not including many hundreds of dollars to get professional help. I would even open up drive if heads are stuck. I saw one thread were drive was put in freezer for 30 mins. Does condensation not create problems? What are some extreme measures that I may try to retrive all or some data?

I would even open up drive if heads are stuck.

Question: If you could put a dollar value on the contents of the drive, what would it be?

If you REALLY need that data stop using the drive. If you really don't care, try a program like Davory (free) Zero Assumption Recovery or GetDataBack. Some software will let you know what it can retrieve before you buy.

I would avoid any physical tricks like freezing or dismantling.

Best of luck.
