I have a Hitachi hard drive that I bought new and used for about 2 months. I decided to reformat it and use it as a slave drive on another comp. The drive formatted OK but when it got to the 'checking free space', it sounded like the drive hung. I let it run for about 1.5 hours but it never did anything more (its only a 6 gig, should have been done quicker than that). Now the bios and windows wont recognize it, fdisk and dos format say there is no drive, and low-level formats dont work, they stop after 2 seconds with a 'maximum errors reached'. anyone think this thing is fixable or just another addition to the spare parts box?

See if you can download diagnostics. Or do a zero fill and start over. In worst case it should be replacable under warranty. Ed Fair

i havent been able to find any diagnostics on the hitachi website..(the site is not very user-friendly and support hasnt replied to my email from a week ago). how would i go about doing a zero fill. ive tried a few low-level formats with no luck.

Try looking on the pchardware forum. there was one there.
You'll be looking for a debug program to write to the boot sector. And I know that Alt255 was one of the thread contributors. Ed Fair
