My hard drive crashed today and now when I try to boot from it it says 'hard disk failed'. I desperately need the data from this drive but I don't know what to do, if anything, to get it back now.

I tried putting the drive, as a slave, into another computer and restarting it. When it came up it was seeing the slave drive cause it listed it as a 'Maxtor40P' but a few lines below that it said 'slave failed'. I tried to continue but Windows wouldn't see this slave drive at all then.

Would software like 'Get Data Back' or some other kind of data recovery software work in a case like this??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
thanks a lot!

Its unlikely that a software solution would work (if drive isn't accessible) - you probably need an (expensive) data recovery company.

Have you tried running drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility on the dirve - generally available from their website (probably just tell you its dead, but....).

yes unfortunitly since its a hardware failure on the drive data recovery will be hard and expensive. I agree with wolluf you may be able to get it to recognize atleast if you try the diagnostic tool. even if you only get one boot you can hopfully get some of your data off.

Thanks for the info on using the drive utility software. I was able to dig some up and tried using it but still did not work.

I'm just going to buy another drive and start over.

This was a Maxtor (have had a lot of trouble with Maxtors) - never buy a Maxtor!

Western Digital isn't too bad but have heard of trouble with them too.

Baracudas seem pretty reliable from Seagate so I'm going to shoot for one of them.

If you hold the drive in your hand on boot, can you feel it spinning? If not, you may have what they call "stiction". You can try freezing the HDD in the freezer overnight (yes, this sometimes works). If it does start spinning, get your info off as quick as you can.

not to seem silly, but the BIOS obviously recognizes the slave on POST as you say......are u sure the jumpers are correct on the slaved hdd? ....and the cabling is 80 cond. for an ultra ata/66......The BIOS set to 'auto' config slave..?
