I know that when installing SQL 2000 there are certain hard drive configurations that aid in the optimization of the database i.e. data on RAID 1+0, logs on RAID 0. Is there anything similar for Analysis Services.

I have a 16 Drives to play with and was wondering what the optimal configuration would be.

TIA

Mike

First when working with a production system nothing should ever be on RAID 0. Logs should be on RAID 1 or RAID 0+1.

Typically people will put the database on RAID 5 unless additional write performance is needed in which case RAID 0+1 will be used.

SSAS has data files just like SQL Server. They should be RAID 5 or RAID 0+1. If you will have several cubes being populated at the same time you may be better off having the cubes on thier own arrays.

One item to note about SSAS is that in the advanced configuration options you can place the temp files to a specified location, which a RAID 0+1 is the best choice. This temp space is where all the processing takes place prior to the data being written into the SSAS file Structure. A RAID 5 typically will be good enough for the Array the Actual cube files reside on.
