I have an external hard drive that is just about a year old and all of a sudden it started clicking and not showing up in my directory. I took the cover off and found the reader arm quickly going from one side the other causing the clicking sound. Is this hard drive toast or can it be fixed? Thanks

since you took the cover off, it is toast now.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

You should never remove the cover from a hard drive unless you don't want to use it again. The gap between the platter & the head is less than a particle of smoke, so a dust particle could render the drive useless. To have the drive working whilst open to the elements is even worse.
So as the above post says, your drive is toast.

No, I disagree. His drive is not toasted yet. There is a chance it can be recovered. At this point he needs to seek help from professional company as 3rd party applications will not help.

P.S. Never open drives if you have critical info on it. Especially if you don't have a clean room.

Yes, CapitalData is right about getting a professional company to look at the drive, but this is normally very expensive. This will only get the data back. The drive itself is toast.
