I use 30G HDD running under WIn XP 5.1.2600. There are few programmes installed, but I am sure they don't eat up as much as my hard disk is showing almost full.

Can anyone please try to help out how to check, scan or delete the junk disk space, if it is indeed a junky...

(P.S: I do get WMI related error at the PC startup. What is that?)

Thanks!

To scan the drive, go to Accessories/System Tools in the Menu and run scandisk from there There are two options analyse and defrag. Try defrag. Is the disk old or new? If old, you may have had a crash.

WMI is the MS 'Windows Management Instrumentation'. There are several sites on the web discussing error returns. Try the link below.

What exactly is the WMI error?

As for the hard disk space, have you tried the following:

1) Run CHKDSK /F in case there is an error with the disk structure that affects the display of free remaining space.

2) Check the hard disk for Folder000

3) Run Disk Cleanup (Start > Run > cleanmgr.exe) and clean out Temporary Internet Files, Temporary files, Recycle Bin and Compress old files. Also, click on the 'More Options' tab then click on the 'Clean up' button in the 'System Restore' area then click on the 'Yes' button that appears.

4) For an automated solution, check out CCleaner from
5) Run System Properties (Start > Run > sysdm.cpl), click on the 'System Restore' tab, click on C: (if not already selected then click on the 'Settings' button. Turn the space assigned for system restores down from the default 10% to something more reasonable (200-300Mb?).

6) To see graphically where the space is being used, check out Folder Size v1.4 from
Hope this helps...

Thanks Rick998 for your help. I am implementing your points. I have 1 query. I find that Windows update files are piled up (everytime I update Windows XP online, a lump of installation files gets downloaded in the HD. Is it?). Probably I need to delete those old files... Can I do that?
Does it implies to other files as well- Windows media, etc?

Appreciate your help!!!

(Thanks ASG0856. I already tried defrag/cleanup utility, but to no avail)

Do a right click properties on the drive; does the Used and Free add up to (almost) 30gb? What files sytem does it say you are using?
