On putting the HD from my old PC to my new one as an IDE slave, everything was fine. The two disks were recognises and I could read both. But when I tried to copy from the old to new the (that's slave to master) the pc hung and the HD was clicking away. Switched the thing off.

PC no longer boots. Removed the slave. Master drive just keeps on clicking.

Is the drive f*cked? How can I get the PC to boot. WinXP is the OS.

Hope someone can help.

Unfortunately, it sure sounds like it's f*&%@d. A new hard drive sounds like the answer. Afterwards, you might try to bring the clicker back to life, but it doesn't sound good.

I just had to send one to Ontrack for a client, unfortunately it had run all weekend and who knows when it went bad. Probably the bearings had failed in the drive motor and let the spindle wobble which let the heads/arms damage the platters. Cost a couple of hundred in overnight and diagnosing to find out the data couldn't be retrieved. And of course, there was no backup of his data except what I did a year earlier during a repair.

Won't name the federal agency in Atlanta that lost one last month that had 5 years worth of data on it that went away when it started clicking. Backups? Wasn't in anybodys job description. Total loss.
