My Hard disk icon is disappeared and when I double click the hard disk, it is pointing me to locate file setup.exe.
Of course, if I right click the drive letter c, i am able to explore the hard disk as usual.

Would any one please suggest me, how to restore harddisk icon and when I double click, I should able to explore the drive.

Well, first off, you could left click on the drive in windows explorer and drag it to your desktop or to the My Computer Window.

I tried it. But did not work. any other suggestion please

Probably my problem is not understood correctly.
When I am double clicking the hard disk drive(C:), I am getting a pop up window saying that setup.exe file is not found and ask me to search for that file browsing option button. Also the standard icon that appear with har disk drive is also missing? I reinstalled windows 98 as well. But just did not work.

Look for C:\autorun.inf

If you find it, delelte it.

This reminds me of the way machines infected with the SIRCAM virus behaved. Do you have up to date Antivirus and have you scanned the machine?

Thanks to all who responded to this message. It just worked by deleting the autorun.inf file and restarting the computer.
