Hi,

I need to recover files from a Netware 4.1 server.
The server does not boot because the hard disk is full (unsufficient disk space to ... during Novell boot)

2 questions :
- Can I mount a novell partition from NT/Win2K ?
- Can I do something to make the server boot anyway, so I can connect to the server & get the files I need ?

thanks

I had this happen a few weeks ago. I have a question first, is your sys drive mounting enought to show when you do a volume list but there is not enough space to load the NDS?

This is what happened to me, it would mount the SYS drive but I couldn't connect to the server. What I did was download a tool off the internet (much like netbasic) called TOOLS6. Running this utility gives you access to the SYS drive so you can run Dir, Copy, Del commands at the console window of the server. I was able to delete/transfer enough files for the sys drive to mount with the NDS. Once I did that then I was able to get into the server and do some major cleanup.

Hope this helps, let me know if you wish to have a copy of the TOOL6 utility, I have kept a copy of it...

Or even TOOLBOX.NLM ..... -----------------------------------------------------

Actually Toolbox and Tools6 are one of the same. The file that I had came compressed as Tools6. You are right the correct nlm is toolbox.... Just spacing out a little...

All I can do is boot up the server,
it is loading DOS,
starting the server executable from the netware directory,
starts loading Netware
and hangs during Netware boot

What can I do with tools6 ?
Is this something I can install on the DOS partition and use this to access files on the netware partition ?

Have you tried booting up with:

SERVER -NA

This will stop the AUTOEXEC.NCF from running, but will still mount SYS. If this works, you can load TOOLBOX.NLM or NETBASIC.NLM and delete stuff off it so it will at least boot to the network. -----------------------------------------------------

nope... didn't try that one...
I'll keep you posted ! --------------------------------------------------------------------

Instead of TOOLBOX.NLM, try manually loading the NetWork Drivers and see if you can connect to the server.

If you want TOOLBOX.NLM, you can download it from:

loading the network drivers doesn't work... hard disk is full...
In the meantime :
I'm installing a new Novell on another disk,
should I be able to mount the old disk in the new NOvell environment ? If yes,... how ?
(via load install? )

thanks --------------------------------------------------------------------

Can't you use TOOLBOX to get rid of some stuff? Surely this would be less time consuming than trying to build a new server?

You could install a basic SYS volume onto another disk, then try and mount the other servers volume, it will work if you take into consideration the following:

a) If the volume on your existing server is called SYS, you will have to boot up using SERVER -NA and rename the volume to something else. This MAY render any further attempts to boot that server useless so be careful.

b) You have to ensure that your hard disk drivers are loaded twice, once for your old disk and once for your new disk. As long as you can see both disks in INSTALL, you should be on a winner.

Good luck, I personally think deleting stuff via TOOLBOX is worth a try!! -----------------------------------------------------

how can I load toolbox ?

Do I just have to copy those files into the
c:\nwserver folder,
boot with server -na
and then do a load toolbox.nlm ?

thanks

copying toolbox.nlm to c:\nwserver went fine,

loaded server with server -na
but when I tried to load toolbox.nlm,
it gave me a message that I can't find toolbox.nlm --------------------------------------------------------------------

If you copied TOOLBOX.NLM to C:\NWSERVER:

LOAD C:\NWSERVER\TOOLBOX.NLM

should work. -----------------------------------------------------

ok, I got around it !

Toolbox didn't work because it relies on a specific patch version of Novell..
so I installed a new Novell on another disk,
booted with it and renamed the SYS volume to SYS2
then added the old disk,
booted.. it boots using the old SYS volume
did a load install,
renamed the SYS volume to oldsys
and renamed the SYS2 to SYS
then rebooted
and now I can access the files... I'm copying them to another machine as we speak...

thanks for all the help ! --------------------------------------------------------------------
