I am pretty new to this OLAP stuff. With this in mind I am trying to develop a strategy to handle Cube information. Part of my problem is that One cube has information from one market which resides in one database and the second Cube which is another market has overlapping unique keys that point to different information on another database.

My question is this, if I create a shared dimension and just change the source in the appropriate cube will this source stay in that particular cube or will it change for the dimension entirely.

Is there any way to handle this appropriately..

FYI I have a number of cubes sharing dimensions and have had no problems as the dimensions are configured to be independent of the cubes. However I have not come across a situation with over lapping keys as yet so would not be sure how this would effect the links. Back your data up and try it, if worst comes to worst make a copy of the dimension and rename it for each cube, embed it into the cubes(configure it to run within that cube only) to ensure no confusing the server, not the most efficient in terms of space saving and dimension update efficiency but should work.

Thanks for your input but I figured out a solution a while back.

I created a unique key in my fact table and when creating my Dimensions I union together views that join up to that unique id for the information from the different databases. That circumvented the overlapping key issue.
That seemed to do the trick, but I am still curious to see if I can make virtual cubes with the same dimensions and have them use different datasources.

thanks again
