Hi all,

Having a problem with a tgz file that was sent to me, the file compressed is over 2 gigs (not sure uncompressed). I went to use the windows version of gzip ( and on the site it recommends using 1.3.5 for files bigger than 4 gig. I downloaded the gzip exe from the site (even though it said 1.2.4) but when being used the prcess ends when 4 gig has uncompressed. My questions are:

1)Does a windows version 1.3.5 exist?
2)Is there any other alternatives that can handle large files? (tried popzip, pkzip, turbozip)
3) IS it possible to split the tgz into smaller tgz's?

thanks in advance,

Ian

The binaries for 1.3.5 are not there, but note:

Large-file support
Packages newer than April 1, 2003, have been compiled with large-file support (LFS). These programs should be able to access files larger than 2 GB, up to 9 EB (exabyte), i.e. 9,000,000 TB (terabyte) = 9,000,000,000 GB. If you never use files larger than 2 GB, there is no need to upgrade packages just because large-file support has been added.
