in r8, ip telephony was a kludge at its best. however, if you really want ip trunks, you can use it, provided that you'll find the old voip resource tn802 board...
i don't remember exactly how it was in r8 but definitely yes, before r12 both ip trunk ports and ip stations were licensed separately and sold in addition to tdm ports.
IP trunking using the TN2302 did come in version 8 along with the 4606/4612 phones. If you are on an 8.4 you can do both but it won't be pretty. I would suggest that you upgrade before attempting either.
IP Trunks became fairly stable in 9.5.
IP Station stability varies depending on phone set type, PBX version and phone firmware.
