gzip 1.3.3 taking too much time

Unix Admins,
I had a issue regarding the update of gzip 1.2.4 to gzip 1.3.3 (2002-03-08) on AIX 5.2. Since this upgrade it has been noticed that gzip is consuming much of the available cpu and it taking a lot of time. I was wondering whether this was a know issue.
Any thoughts on the subject are welcome.
