What operating system are you in?
PC - EasyZip (find it on google)
Mac - Stuffit Expander

I'm on Windows, but I've never been able to open the *.gz files.

Go get the EasyZip program which will open the .gz archives. As for waht's inside them, you may not be able to use that either if it ends up being Unix but you'll know that pretty quickly once it opens.
