Apologies if this has been covered (please point me). I did a search on GWXConfigManager.exe and without the extension but didn't get any hits. I'm looking for Tek-Tips advice on how to get rid of this Microsoft executable, which doesn't appear to add any value to my Windows 7 operating system, and indeed interferes with it. Thanks in advance.

I don't know why that's running on your computer. I see GWX.EXE is running on my computer and it's part of the Windows 10 upgrade process. I don't have GWXConfigManager.exe running at all. It's in the folder C:\Windows\System32\GWX
If it's actually running and not just GWX.exe, you can probably snuff it out with Autoruns or MSConfig.

I would really doubt that it's causing you any problems. If you have problems, look to another source.

IF you uninstall the update KB3035583 that will probably take care of all the Windows 10 upgrade programs running.

GWX stands for 'Get Windows 10' and you can find some (fairly dull) info about GWXConfigManager.exe here:
Update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1

It's part of Microsoft's push to get people to move to Windows 10 when it's released by telling them that it's on its way and allowing them to register for an automatic upgrade.

If it's interfering with your operating system - other than the annoying notification icon that won't stay hidden - then post the details and someone will try to figure out what's up.

If you didn't get any hits when searching for GWXConfigManager.exe then I suggest you try a new search engine as Google gives loads of them.

Thank you Professor goombawaho
@Nelviticus - I only searched Tek-Tips, and only in the Windows 7 forum. In general, I don't trust the 'ordinary' internet. I mean, everything on the internet is true, right? No one would deliberately post false information that would cause me to need to purchase their product, right? Or send money to some Nigerian Prince, right? And even things in an official Microsoft forum could be "tainted"; blatently biased for certain. :)

I was wondering how you didn't find any information out there.

I would be JUST as cautious about the advice given here as well. Everyone has an opinion and often IT solutions can be in the grey zone. Lots of answers are very straightforward, but for others you need to sift through the opinions before choosing a course of action, regardless of where you're reading/researching.

Thanks for your thoughts. My opinion is that tek-tips is more reliable and more accurate than the internet in general. Here are a couple of reasons:
[ul]
[li]tek-tips is self-policing: members will critique and vet postings from other members.[/li]
[li]tek-tips mgmt does some screening of members and will boot people as needed.[/li]
[li]tek-tips members are tech-savvy, so this isn't a real good hunting ground for hackers, phishers, etc.[/li]
[/ul]

I'm on double secret probation, so I know.
