GW6.5 Conflict between TIDs and Docs

I have a client with GW6.5 that wants to ensure that any bad incoming messages are forwarded to his email address.

The documentation states that this can be done in the GWIA.CFG by using the /BADMSG switch. However, this doesn't seem to be working. I found a TID that said that with GW6.x, bad messages are rejected at the Daemon level and will never be processed, regardless of the /BADMSG switch.

So I am wondering what other people do in this situation, have you found this same thing to be true, and what do you do to work around this.

The main thing my client wants is this... He understands that he may get a lot of unwanted messages from spam bots.. But he wants to make sure that spelling errors in a valid email address aren't completely lost.

Thanks for any ideas.

Marvin,

In the GWIA object under the SMTP/MIME tab there is a page titled "Undeliverables". Here, you can set undeliverables to automatically forward to the postmaster. Just enable this option, add your client as the postmaster account and restart the gwia.

I'm curious to know if this is what you were looking for.

Yes, that is what I mean, but it doesn't seem to be working that way..

Say someone wants to email JOHN at whatever domain, but don't realize his address is JON@domain.com.. That mail should bounce, but also send a copy to the postmaster, right?

Well it doesn't seem to be working, so I did some looking and found TID 10064554 that says it no longer works in GW6.x. This contradicts the GW6.5 documentation as well as the options available in the GWIA object.

So I am wondering if other people have found this to be true and what are you doing as a workaround.

As I understand it, it is not possible to do what your client wants in this version of GroupWise. "Undeliverable", in the current version of GroupWise, means any message that is addressed to a valid user, but is formatted incorrectly.

According to TID 10066135, which you may have already seen, the work around is to install a GroupWise 5.5 GWIA.

I have no idea what the logic was for them taking this feature away, but hopefully they'll re-implement it in a future version.

Good luck,
Ron

Thanks Ron. That process they outline would work if it wasn't a single server environment. I'm going to try to be creative and see if I can find a way to make it work anyway. Do you think I could just replace the 6.5 Gwia with a 5.5 version? It wouldn't be any different than if they had a 5.5 system and just upgraded everything but the Gwia...

Thanks again. BTW, I used to live in Grand Rapids. Michigan is awesome.

cant see any reason that having a 5.5 gwia would be a problem except it doesnt support esmtp (if they need it)

i can have a play on monday and see if it works on our gwia - it's a funny one as it's a beta sp2 with a few specific field patches from novell

Marvin,

Terry's right. It shouldn't be a problem at all. There haven't been many changes to the GWIA in quite a while. The hardest part will probably be getting your hands on one.

Yes, Michigan IS awesome. Lived here all my life (except a 1 year stint in Toledo, but that's even practically Michigan). I currently work in Ann Arbor. I was just passing through your neck of the woods last weekend. It's really nice over there.

Have a good (and safe) Independence Day!

Going the 5.5 route will work around the issue using the GroupWise modules. Just to play it safe and cover your but, create a 5.5 secondary domain and attach the 5.5 GWIA to that domain, not your 6.5 domain.

I have not personnaly run into this problem my self. One client that did want it got the bounced messages got them from his NAV Gateway. Don't setup GWIA to talk directly on the Internet anymore, just a dumb SMTP server talking to a gateway only.

Or creating a distribution list that forwards to the admin for a whole bunch of misspelled users names (pref in their own OU).
