We're in the process of moving from GW 5.5 to GW 6.5. Since I don't yet have 6.5 loaded and in front of me to play with, I thought I'd ask some of you guys who are using it a question.

We've been having a real problem with Autoresponder loops. An Autoresponse here hits an Autoresponse on an external server and the race is on to see who can flood the mailboxes fastest.

I know that GW 6.5 has lots of new filters for spam and virii, is there any logic that can be employed to spot and stop these loops? Seems like it ought to be easy enough, if more than 100 emails are sent to the same address within 1 hour stop Autoresonding and notify Admin; or something similar.

Is there anything like this in to GW 6.5?

TIA.

Now that I have 6.5 running and have had time to peruse the manuals, sure enough GW 6x can solve my problem using the Mailbomb Protection. See TID10074739.

Beautiful.

Lawnboy,

Groupwise 6.0 fixed the problem since it will not Auto Reply to the same E-mail address twice. It must cache the info or something when it executes the rule. I have not had any problems with mail boxes filling up since I went to 6.0. As for the Mailbomb setting in GWIA I think it was in 5.5 but it never seemed to stop that problem no matter how tight I had the settings.

KenB: There's something odd here, one of the PO's I've been having trouble with loops on is a GW 6.5 PO. Maybe they've turned something off.

Marvhuffaker: 30 emails in 15 minutes. The default of 10 sec. is way too fast for my setup; the mail doesn't propagate that fast through my ISP. I figure 2 per minute is still faster than anybody is going to be physically replying.

So far, a loop hasn't occured of it's own accord. I may have to start one myself to see what happens...

Asking for trouble. I'd wait to see if it happens on it's own instead of trying to start one. Just my opinion.

The safety feature which prevents auto-responder messages from looping CAN be disabled, though I do not recommend it. Checking to see if it's disabled is easy. In ConsoleOne, select the domain. From the menus, choose "Tools > GroupWise Utilities > Client Options...". Click "Send" on the client options popup. On the "Send Options" tab there is a setting titled "Allow reply rules to loop". I recommend that you leave this checkbox blank and lock the setting from the domain.

Ron,

You're right, and I'm too busy to be looking for trouble anyway. Still haven't had a loop occur since we moved to 6.5.

Nice tip, I didn't know that setting was there. (can ya tell I'm spread a little thin?)
