i have a client that has his own server set up at his home..now i got all call for some work but he wants me to set the site up on his personal server..

ok here's where im at..i have used a ftp to get the data to an already established server using the ftp and username and password provided..of course..i have used ie to upload the same way..

however i have never set up a site on a server manually..

guys i really need some detailed steps as to how to go about setting this up and preparing the server to upload the site..

where do i begin..

i know i should know this however this will be my first..so with that said no time like the present to get it figured out..

pop the cherry so to speak..

thanks in advance..

Use the FTP to upload the same as you would to pull data.
What are you using for an ftp?
If you are using ws_ftp, then when you connect, like you are going to pull data or files, you just make your directories, upload the files to the directories you want.
Make sure you upload html and all text files in ascii and all images, wav and sound files in binary.
I use Ws_Ftp as an ftp program, because I am lazy. LOL!
Does he have an operating system on it?
A control panel? How set up is this server?

don't know yet how set up it is..

ok so say i'm a dummy, which i pretty much am..wana walk me through everything..accessing his control panel if he has one..things like that..i understand how to create directories and how to upload as ascii and binary for images..

i'm guessing wullie i just don't want to look stupid when i get ready to upload the site to his server..

so i guess i really need to know if the server is ready to be uploaded to..once i am sure of that, where do i start setting up the server to be ready for the site..

if a client called you and said i need a site i already have a server..what are your first questions for that person?.

what steps would you take to get the job done..

i know this is a big question, but i need this in a big way..once i get this, i'll be ready for anything..

What are you working with?
What FTP are you using?
What are you using to create the pages?

Next, you need to find out about the server. Is it ready?
Use your FTP program to take a look at the directories. See what is there and more importantly, what is not there.
What are you/client planning on doing?
Flash, cgi, basic pages?

If he has a control panel, then it is probably a finished product. Meaning that it is setup.
What info has the client given you for the server?
Username? password? Server name (usually the domain name or IP)?
Have you used an FTP program?

Lots of questions.

yes i have used a ftp program..

the site will be flashed based with some php backend..or cgi..and maybe some frames with html..not sure until tomorrow and see what exactly what he wants..just know it will be a real estate site so far..

so if he doesn't know if his server has a control panel, how do i check?.how do i get the ftp for the server that way i can upload the files?.if he doesn't know it..

i haven't really got more info that that to go on because i meet with him tomorrow..so i don't know how far along the server is yet..will know more tomorrow..

so if it is ready..next steps?

if not, i come back and get info to set it up..i'm sure i can find a tuorial somewhere..

but i'm sure i also need to check if he has perl installed right?.for running the cgi..also i would have to install php right?.or no..

keep the thoughts coming please..

Hi mate,

Go to the Apache forum on this site and take a look at the FAQ section. I have written a step by step guide to setting up the server on Windows.

The steps include setting up PHP, MySql and Perl. If he does have windows and needs the server installed, then that is a full guide on how to do it.

If you have any problems with the setup, you can use the feedback form that is on the faq and I will guide you through any problems as soon as I get the mail.

If he has the server already set up but no ftp access, then you need to get a ftp server, install and configure that for the system. You can get one from Bulletproof FTP is a good one. Make sure that it is a FTP server you get and not a FTP client.

If you are going to be working on the site in front of the actuall server, then it's just a case of drag and drop to put the files in the directory for the site.

The following is just a suggestion and the opinion of me and many, many others. If the guy has IIS set up, then I would personally recommend to him that he changes to apache as it is far more stable and secure. IIS has so many bugs and is nowhere near as good a server as Apache is.

If you have any problems at all, don't hesitate to let em know.

Good luck!!

Hope this helps Wullie
