I just upgraded to RedHat 7.2. All went well until I rebooted. Now I just get the text login. What file do I need to edit or what command do I use to reconfigure my system to load X11? I typed runlevel and it says: N 5 and when I ran chkconfig --list | less, and it shows a lot of the things I had started turned off on level 5. Hope there is a quick solution to this. Thanx for any kind of help.

Did yu try Xconfigurator and redetect the settings to run Xwindows? Try it and see if it helps. You may have to try several configurations before it works. James Collins

Hi,

Firstly, I presume you know you can just enter 'startx' to start up X. On the default runlevel, you just edit /etc/inittab and change :

id:3:initdefault:

to

id:5:initdefault:

This sets the default run-level to 5 (X11) instead of 3 (console mult-user).

In a perfect world those things would take care of my problem but I think it's a little deeper than that. I can run startx and get GUI that way but I can't find where to configure it to start at boot time. My inittab file has id:5:initdefault: like it's supposed to so where do I go from here? The new 7.2 version uses Nautilus as it's interface so I have to get used to it. The other differences that may be causing problems are booting GRUB instead of LILO. I get an error when I boot that says my hostname can't be found on the internet when Nautilus starts and my webserver quit running because it doesn't like my name based virtualhost configs. If anyone else is having problems with 7.2, let me know and I'll go back to 7.1. Thanks Butchrecon and ifincham for your input.

Hi,

/etc/inittab should also have something like this :

# Run xdm in runlevel 5

# xdm is now a separate service

x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

this would respawn either 'gdm' (gnome), 'kdm' (kde) or 'xdm' otherwise. Those are the display managers that bring up the graphical login screen under X. You'd also need to make sure services like xfs were active at runlevel 5.

I've been using nautilus for some time on rh 7.1 via ximian gnome and I much prefer it myself. Haven't tried RH 7.2 yet though...

Regards
