If I try to log into root with the correct password from the 5.06a graphical user login screen on the PC hooked to the server, it justs kicks back to the login screen. But if I do <ctrl><alt><F3> and bring up the non graphical 'login', it logs in fine. I've verified the 'caps' and tried many times. It seems like this happened before; but I forgot what the problem was. Any ideas? Thanks.

It could be that the GUI screen (/dev/tty02) has been locked due to excessive failed login attempts.
Run "scoadmin", select "System", then "Terminal Manager". There is an option to unlock a tty.
If that's not it, then there is a good possibility that your Xwindows settings are incorrect. I very seldom use the GUI I/F, so others here could probably help troubleshoot that better.
