Is the CHKDSK run from the command line the same program you can run from in windows as the 'disk defragmenter' or is a seperate program to do the same thing?
Defrag simply moves data around the disk into a more logical order.
Chkdsk does a physical check of the disk and file structure before the OS fully loads. There can't be anything else accessing the disk while chkdsk is running which is why you have to reboot if you want to check the system drive.
