GTK+ Setup Problem

First of all I'd like to say I'm no computer genius for whatever it's worth...

Here's my dilemma. The first time I installed GIMP I installed just the source version, so I proceeded to uninstall it yada yada because I was clueless as to what was what.

After finding the Windows version, I proceeded to download GTK+ (I'm on XP), and when I opened up the setup, it said, "The setup has detected a fatal error and cannot continue at this time," and that a "previous installation of GTK+ Runtime Environment was detected that cannot be automatically upgraded by Setup." It says below to remove the previous installation and then run the Stup again. On the bottom I checked the box that said "Run the uninstaller for previous GTK+ installation," and closed the Setup only to get a popup window telling me "there was an error starting the uninstaller. Please remove the previous GTK+ installation manually."

So, I searched and searched and deleted everything relating to either GIMP or GTK+ and checked all my installations etc.
I re-downloaded GTK+ and the error is still there...

What's the problem?

Any input would be greatly appreciated, and sorry for the wall of text...

I just did, and I'm still getting the same error.

Same here. Oddly, I have just reformatted the PC - there WERE no registry entries "left behind." 2.3.5 with the 2.8.9 GTK loaded first (and even after restart) - says "installer expired," and to download latest GTK.

Frustrating. Guess it's back to 2.2.9 and hope THAT GTK Runtime "works.
