I've just installed CrunchBang Linux on an old laptop. It used to have Redhat 8 (wouldn't take Redhat 9 or any of the Fedoras). Everything went through smoothly but after installation, grub cannot find the OS. I've tried this twice, including repairs etc. It always says it is going to look for the os in /dev/sda but can never find it. Any ideas?

To be fair, #! may be doing exactly what it says on the box:

Support

CrunchBang Linux is not officially supported by any commercial entity. Support is provided by the CrunchBang community. Also, because CrunchBang is derived from Debian, you may find the Debian wiki and forums helpful when looking for support.

Disclaimer

CrunchBang Linux is not recommended for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. CrunchBang Linux could possibly make your computer go CRUNCH! BANG! Therefore CrunchBang Linux comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by applicable law.

CrunchBang runs as a live CD, so why not boot from that, and follow the instructions as below:

The installation works on a VM with 64Mb memory and a 3Gb disk so I thought I'd try it on a real machine.

First I tried the live CD. That worked so I did a full install. I'll try your link - maybe it is the old grub from Redhat 8 still there.

I got halfway through that on an ULite disk, then I thought since ULite will work on 64Mb, let's give it a try. I quite like openbox and LXDE.

I forgot why I didn't want ULite/LUbuntu in the first place but it was too late. It took forever downloading stuff off the net. Started about 4 hours ago. It stayed as 75% for almost an hour doing the language stuff. Now it is off again. #! was a lot quicker.
