A user's message was bounced by the system with the following error message: 500 Syntax Error - Overly Long Data Received.

Novell Knowledgebase suggests that the error can be generated if the firewall is configured to set limits on an SMTP data line length. Trusted on-site network guy says there are no firewall restrictions that he can detect.

The message contained 15 Excel file attachments and 1 Word attachment. Do you think the number of attachments could be the problem?

Should we place this user on a file attachment diet?

Hi dcehling -

The user file attachment diet wouldn't be a bad idea, but in the mean time, have your onsite network guru look at the default settings.

He's right that there may not be any restrictions, however usually firewalls will automatically by default set SMTP data line length to 1024 bytes. You can override these settings by manually changing the values.

I think if the sender simply divided that email in half your user would be all set -- rather then editting your firewall configuration.

Good Luck.

Hello Michigan,

Thank you for the reply. It sounds like a very reasonable solution.
